Arbor Day

Monday, May 7th has been proclaimed as Riggins Arbor Day and Spring Clean-up Day.   (This is Monday after Rodeo Weekend, and community-wide cleanup will be necessary!)  Please join us as we spruce up the streets and sidewalks after a busy weekend!  If you plan to sweep the city sidewalks, please do not deposit the debris in the storm drains.  Bag it, or box it, and the City crews will come by and pick it up.  The community wide cleanup is scheduled in the morning, with an Arbor Day Celebration and planting following in the Park.  Three new trees, purchased with the help of a $150 Arbor Day Grant from Id Department of Lands and Idaho Power, will be planted.

No 2007 FIREWORKS Scheduled……..

At the April City Council meeting it was reported that the Fire Department was reluctant to sponsor the annual fireworks display this year, citing concern for the safety of the firemen and the vulnerability of our community if a major fire was started. They have concerns about the safety of the event, considering the dry steep terrain and close proximity of structures along the riverbank, as well as the wind and dry grassy hillside across the river.   During the previous two years, there were dangerously dry conditions with strong winds.  During the course of these displays, hillside fires were ignited, one of which resulted in a firemen’s injury.  With heavy hearts, the Council agreed to accept the recommendation that the fireworks display be discontinued because of the safety concerns for the community, the liability risk, and the welfare of the volunteer firemen.  The Mayor and Council regret the decision to forgo this popular community event, but feel it is the wise decision, based on these safety issues.  It was reported that there is approximately $1200 in the fireworks fund remaining from 2006.  It was suggested that the donated monies be used for a 4th of July celebration other than fireworks or used as match funds for the FEMA fire equipment grant.  No decision was made concerning the fireworks fund balance, so if you have a good idea for the use of these donated funds, give the City Hall a call.

BATTER UP!

Springtime means baseball, and Little League is coming to Riggins!  Recreation Director Sharon Boggan reports that Susan and Charlie Shepherd will be coaching two teams this year.  The 1st thru 3rd grades will be playing Co-Ed Pitching Machine Ball and the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade boys will make up a Little League Team.  Practice will begin after the Rodeo, and if you haven’t signed up yet, permission slips and registration are still available at the City Hall

WATER MISER TIP OF THE DAY……. Irrigate Wisely!

1.        Plants die from over-watering! Water only when necessary!

2.       Water close to the ground - fine high spray evaporates in the air!

3.       Water in the evenings, morning or night –- not during mid-day.

4.       To really conserve, hand water where possible!
